Halloween
Halloween (All Hallows Evening) also known as "All Saints Eve" or All Hallows Eve. It is celebrated in many countries on 31st October. It is the mark of the beginning of a three-day celebration of All Hallows Tide. This festival is dedicated to the dead people which includes martyrs, saints and all the faithful left for their heavenly abode.
The tradition is different in the countries that celebrate it. There are various activities which includes trick-or-treating where kids are dressed up in different costumes and they go door-to- door asking a question "trick-or-treat?" where trick means that it is a threat to perform a mischief in that particular household if treat is not given. A treat is usually in the form of candies or nuts. Another activity includes carving pumpkins into jack-o-lantern, lighting bonfires, telling scary stories, costume parties and many other activities.
One more interesting activity is apple-bobbing where a tub is filled with water and apples, kids with their hands tied at the back have to pick it up with their mouth..
Food which they eat on this day is also very interesting. Different countries have different foods, usually its a veg meal day like candies, apples, nuts, pancakes etc.
Various religions dedicate a particular day, week or month to remember the dead. Like, Hindus pay homage and perform a ceremony during Pitru-Paksha to remember their forefathers which is observed for a fortnight called Shraadh. Muslims observes Muharram to pay respect to their ancestors. In the same way, Christians celebrate Halloween by lighting up candles in the church as well as on the graves of the departed souls of their family so that they are at peace.
